OPAA JUVENILE PROSECUTOR TRAINING - 2014

This one day training will be geared toward the juvenile prosecutor, but all are welcome to attend. Unfortunately, due to venue space issues, attendance is limited to 120 attendees so register early!

10:00 - 11:30 How To Prepare The Juvenile Witness Or Victim
Interviewing, preparing, and examining juvenile witnesses presents unique challenges to trial prosecutors. This presentation will discuss these challenges and suggest strategies the practitioner can employ to address them.

11:45 - 12:30 Legislative Update
An overview of recent case law affecting the prosecution of juveniles. This session will cover delinquency, traffic, abuse, neglect and dependency cases. Also custody and malpractice issues will be discussed.

1:30 - 3:00 Social Media Tools For The Juvenile Prosecutor
The age of social media presents new challenges to the juvenile prosecutor. We will discuss gathering and preserving Facebook, KIK, and Instagram (or the latest craze of the day) evidence and using it in court. We will also discuss the “sexting” trend and how to better handle these cases.

3:15 - 4:00 The Basics Of Juvenile Competency- From A Prosecutor’s Perspective
In 2011 Ohio enacted ORC §2152.51-59, which defines juvenile competency and the process by which a juvenile defendant’s competency is assessed, adjudicated, and- when necessary- attained. This workshop will give an overview of the legal concept of competency, and details of the Ohio law. Particular emphasis will be given to what prosecutors might focus on as the process winds through juvenile proceedings.
